Hitachi DVD player freezes - is it fixable?

My son has a Hitachi AX M110 DVD player, which is approximately 2 years old.

It has started to freeze when playing DVDs - at the same point on every disc. It freezes at approximately 1hr 27 minutes. It is not possible to fast forward past the "freeze" point.

Has anyone else experienced this problem, and if so, was it fixable? My husband is fairly clued up on electronics and is quite handy at fixing things, so if it's a simple enough thing to do, with the right pointers, he could possibly do it himself.

TIA

If it's out of warranty then you might as well have a look. The laser will be on a carriage, which is probably riding on two rails. It could be that dirt has accumulated on them. The carriage needs to be able to move with a high degree of accuracy and so it wouldn't take much. It could also be dirt on the laser itself, or perhaps it's just wear and tear on the mechanism.
