I'm not sure how to describe the thing, but i know that you can get it online.. can anyone help? hopefully it's free. my DD has hers w/out using her Coolmat and it's driving me mad and I'm so worried her laptop will conk out when it's just under it's guarantee!

Coolmats are what idiots use when the fan has blocked because they can't be bothered to get the laptop fixed. Using a coolmat on a perfectly working laptop will actually CAUSE damage as it is pushing air at the internal fan thus REDUCING its efficiency.
Get a can of compressed air, commonly known as an air duster, and once a month blast it through the vents on the laptop to blow the dust out of the heatsinks0 -
