In that case, it's even easier: tell them that it was dumped on your doorstep, so you don't know who owns it. :D

No, the bit that concerned me was the fact they seemed to know I had a windows pc and they just asked who owned it. It came across as a factual call rather than a sales pitch or a scam thing.

The majority of PCs in the country are pre-loaded with Windows, so if they do happen to call someone without one, they just hang up and go looking for someone else to hoodwink......

Just like the guy who called me. An assumption is made that you have a Windows machine because the majority do - nothing more complicated than that. Lists of names and addresses ostensibly for marketing use are to be had two a penny BTW.

The guy who called me wasted about 15 minutes trying to help me find my "Start" button before I put him out of misery and told him I run Linux despite his claims that Windows error messages had been received from my machine. Didn't like being called a scammer either but didn't deny it.
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com

Easiest thing to do to scare off unwanted callers is to use an answerphone ..

I am wondering if this is anything to do with Sky (or rather Sky's data)...

I had one of these calls, and I had recently been downloading McAffee from Sky.
The bloke insisted my PC had been sending them messages saying it had a problem, and I asked "which PC", and "what is the name of the PC", and the poor bloke kept going when I said that he didn't have a message from my PC and was reading off a piece of paper. However, he then mentioned antivirus and I said which one, and he said McAffee, but when I said I didn't have McAffee he hung up.

I'm sure I've had a call similar after having downloaded from Sky, and I've also had the Sky scammers asking if I'd had the new viewing card they'd delivered. (I said they weren't from Sky and I wasn't telling them whether or not I had it anyway.)
