Problem with washer from Comet, sales of goods act 1979

Hi, I hope I am posting in the correct forum for this. I purchased a Beko washing machine in July 2009 for £220 from Comet in my local store. All was well until June 2010 when it began to make a loud grinding noise on wash cycles. The engineer came out to it, free, as it was under warranty, and he at time said it was the belt. It had dried out and so was making a noise, and it needed lubricating. So he sprayed it with WD40 and it did the trick, no more grinding noises! He also said at the time it was a common issue and was caused by heat from the element......bizzarre for a washing machine if you ask me!
Fast forward to Sept 2010 and EXACTLY the same thing is happening again. Only this time as the washing machine is out of MANUFACTURERS warranty, they want a £100 callout fee to inspect the machine. In my eyes the machine was not fixed properly in June, otherwise we would not be having this issue now. Comet have even told me, that if you use a 90 degree wash on the machine, that can damage it, thats why I am having an issue!! Utter piffle! If it was not designed to run on a 90 degree wash it shouldn't have the programme on it in the first place. My housemate is a chef and as such he washes his whites on a hot wash once a week. All other washes are at 30 degrees and on a quick cycle.
I do not believe the machine is of a satisfactory quality if they are sticking to thier argument of the problem being caused by a hot wash cycle. I have been to the shop, no help, called customer care and HQ, no help, they keep repeating the same thing, nothing to do with us, as it's out of warranty. I believe I should be protected under the sales of good act 1979, and think the machine should be fixed free of charge, properly, like it should have been in June, not squirted with some WD40.
i appreciate it's a cheap machine but £220 is alot of money to me, and I certainly expected to get more than 14 months service out of it before having to spend money on repairs!
I have been promised a call back by a manager by 5pm tmrw, but I am not holding my breath, anyone else had a similar issue? Any advice appreciated. Sorry if it was a bit rambling!
PS> I know I can get a man from the local paper to sort it for about £30 but its the principle, why should I be out of pocket financially for a defective product?

Given the time that you have had the machine you would need to get an independent report identifying the product as being inherently faulty, until you do this you cannot enforce your rights under the SOGA against the retailer.
Once you have this you can force them (via the courts if necessary) to refund / repair / replace.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
Unless you follow the advice of the poster above, I dont think you can achieve a great deal more.
We have an issue only a few months after purchase and couldnt get it sorted properly.
Best thing is to avoid Comet and Curries in future - once all of us start to boycott them it we will eventually get our "justice"0 -
Got nowhere with them at all. I decided it wasn't worth the hassle and got a local man in to repair the machine for £20. It was the belt.
