Photo-editing lightness and brghtness

I use Serif Photoplus. There are two functions that seem to do much the same thing. A brightness adjuster and a lightness. Can any one explain what the difference is between the two, please?

I took some pics recently that were deliberately under exposed to avoid white burn out. My camera allows under-over exposure in 1/3rd stop steps to+/- 2 stops. Has anyone a rule of thumb to what number should be inseted in to the dialog box to bring the brightness or lightness to what it would have been but for the under exposure?

Good question. I've just checked the PhotoPlus companion and it says

Brightness: refers to overall lightness or darkness...

Lightness: is what we intuitively understand as relative darkness or lightness - ranging from full black at one end to full white at the other.

So its overall against relative. Clear as mud.
