British Gas
You are currently on our standard tariff for gas. Therefore, I'm pleased to say you can definitely make savings by switching to our WebSaver 9 tariff. WebSaver 9 guarantees a minimum of 6% discount on our standard tariff prices until 31 October 2011. The prices in your area are as follows;
Gas Tier 1 - 6.219p per kilowatt hour (kWh)
Gas Tier 2 - 2.663p per kWh
Electricity Tier 1 - 21.377p per kWh
Electricity Tier 2 - 8.583p per kWh
The 2 tier gas tariff that British Gas uses works by charging the first 2680 kWh used each year at Tier 1, with everything else charged at Tier 2. For Electricity, Tier 1 covers the first 500 kWh per year. Please note that the above prices do not include VAT, like all suppliers, we add this separately at a rate of 5%.
You could change your current gas account to WebSaver 9 or choose to join us for electricity as well. As far as Dual Fuel is concerned, if you take both fuels from us you automatically receive a discount on your electricity bill. This is a discount off the Tier 2 consumption charges of 0.537p per kWh, up to a maximum of £3.75 (including VAT) per quarter.
Although the WebSaver prices are guaranteed to remain at least 6% cheaper until 31 October 2011 you are not tied in as such. You are free to move to another tariff or give us 28 days notice to change supplier. However, there is a £30.00 per fuel cancellation fee for coming off WebSaver 9 before it ends.
When you pay by monthly Direct Debit there is a discount off your Tier 2 gas consumption charges of 0.196p per kWh, up to a maximum of £16.25 (including VAT) per quarter. For electricity there is a Direct Debit discount off the Tier 2 consumption charges of 1.429p per kWh up to a maximum of £10.00 (including VAT) per quarter. The discount received does not change for dual fuel or different tariffs, but can vary according to seasonal consumption.
Based on your consumption of 5322 kWh, I would say your annual electricity usage would cost about £492.00 on the WebSaver 9 tariff. WebSaver 9 is a special limited online offer that you have to apply for on www.britishgas.co.uk. Please be sure to check the terms and conditions before you apply.

In terms of tariffs, our cheapest available tariff will always be one that involves online account management and payment by monthly Direct Debit. As I see that you have both of these you are currently eligible for SaveOnline3 electricity only, and if you were to bring over your gas you would be eligible for the dual fuel version.
The online tariff is only available to switch to via our website, or online broker sites, but I have included some information as requested below;
This tariff has a contract end date of 1 November 2011, and a cancellation charge of £30.00 for dual fuel or £10.00 for single electricity should you change suppliers or tariff before this date. The end date is also linked into the tariff price, as on SaveOnline3 your unit rates are guaranteed to tract at least six percent lower than our standard rates until 1 November 2011.
In addition to the six percent saving on your unit rates you would also continue to receive the six percent discount that your currently get for paying promptly by monthly Direct Debit, and this would increase to eight percent if your account was for both fuels.
Based on your electricity usage between August 2009 and August 2010, which equates to 5322 kWh, your total charges excluding VAT or discount on this tariff would have been £493.80. Please see the breakdown below;
- 900 kWh per annum at primary rate of 15.761 pence per kWh = £141.85
- 4422 kWh (remaining) at secondary rate of 7.959 pence per kWh - £351.95
Based on your gas usage of 14207 kWh your total charges excluding VAT or discount on this tariff would have been £398.98. Please see the breakdown below;
- 2680 kWh per annum at primary rate of 5.545 pence per kWh = £148.61
- 9727 kWh (remaining) at secondary rate of 2.574 pence per kWh = £250.37
Total combined charges per annum excluding VAT or discount = £892.78
Total discount per annum (eight percent for dual fuel) = £71.42
Total VAT per annum (three percent for domestic customers) = £41.07
Total charges per annum including VAT and discount = £862.43
Approximate value of monthly Direct Debit would be £72.00.
If you were to stick with an electricity only account and switch to SaveOnline3, I would calculate your approximate monthly Direct Debit value as below;
Total charges excluding VAT or discount per annum = £493.80
Total discount per annum (six percent) = £29.63
Total VAT per annum (three percent for domestic customers) = £23.21
Total charges per annum including VAT and discount = 487.38
Approximate value of monthly Direct Debit would be £41.00
As your current Direct Debit payments are set at £45.00 per month, this would equate to a saving of £48.00 per annum.
