Lodger's Debts

Hi All,

I want my partner to move in with me. I currently own (mortgaged) my own home and am due to move soon (again will be mine mortgaged) and at that point I want him to move in with me. He has some debts which I beleive he is in the process of paying off. He is in full time employment.
We have agreed to do everything legally and have him sign legal documentation as a lodger. I know to keep proper records, not allow him to contribute to house etc etc.

However the question I have is - do I need to be extra cautious if he has debts?
Are there any circumstances where the lodger's debts can be passed on to the home owner?

Also he currently stays with me on a regular basis as he now works near me and his parents like miles away. We have no current arrangement in place as this is not his address he just stays - but do I need to be cautious at the moment?

Any advice etc much appreciated.

Caution should always be exercised when dealing with people who have debts, so the best thing to do would be to ensure that there is no financial connection between the two of you, like joint bank accounts, joint loans or any bills in both of your names.

No, not as long as there are no bills for the property in the other person's name and you have no joint contracts of any kind.

At the moment, if he's not contributing anything towards your mortgage or bills then his status is a guest and therefore as far as as I can see there is no risk.

It seems that you have things pretty sorted already
  • Thank you that really reassures me. I've already been very clear abot not wanting his name on anything no joint accounts etc until he gets out of debt. He understands where I'm coming from and is happy for things to work this way until he clears his debt.
