Can you not get inconspicuous turbines that actually fit inside your roof? I am sure I have seen info about these somewhere.

  • I have been after a turbine for ages - my husband isn't giving in - anyway from what i reserached you need to have planning permission to have a turbine errected.

One other thing - in order to really make a turbine pay - you need to be able to benefit from selling power back to the NG - these turbines cost approx 15k but you can get a grant for about £5K.

We live on a windy hill so i think that a turbine here would pay for itself, however, i am not sure that the turbines in B&Q will have the technology to power a whole house - depending on how big your home is of course.

My dh is saying that it would be better to wait until the technology improves, which it will do - problem being, if these don't sell will B&Q continue to stock them - the sales need to be good in order for the price to come down - so hopefully people will want to fork out the money and buy them now.

Still i think that no matter how long one takes to pay for itself, if they reduce the damage to the environment they have to be good - eventually people will be taking free power. Hmm we'd probably get to that point after a few years.

    I want one now!

You want the price to come down? .. howsabout the government insisting that ALL government and local government buildings, hospitals, schools, MOD etc etc should have solar and wind power generation installed? Howsabout them insisting on the same for ALL new build private developments?

    Will they? No.

Why? Because between all 200 government ministers and junior ministers, they haven't got the collective imagination of a shrew. . .

I'm sure I'm missing something there? How does the wind get at it to turn it?
And wouldn't it make the loft a bit dangerous  - even with a hard hat (and a kite)?
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

If you think of a velux window, well a similar sized opening in the roof with a turbine inside, that sort of thing.

Niccy is correct, turbines are able to change direction so they face into the wind, they can't be fixed. Also the wind wouldn't flow through it unless it had somewhere to go on the other side so you would have to have an exit for the wind out of your roof as well as the entrance where the turbine was so it was like a wind tunnel. If you did that the roof wouldn't be terribly effective as a roof and it would still be interfering with the wind flow.

Seriously if you are interested in wind power you should take a look at this guide. It is produced by the Danish wind power association but the link is to the english version. It is really an extremely good guide. It gives a solid, factual, technical overview, presented very clearly. Although the organisation exsists to promote the Danish wind industry it isn't a sales site. It doesn't refer to roof mounted turbines but the principles are the same. If you are interested in wind power or thinking of getting a domestic turbine then I highly recomend it.

Isn't Ken planning on implementing a rule requiring all new office builidings and public buildings in London to generate a proportion of their own energy requirements? There has been talk of a similar move by Manchester Council. I suspect it is something which will eventually make its way into building regulations, initially for larger buildings but perhaps later for domestic buildings as well.
