burn in carpet from russell hobbs hoover

i recently purchased a russell hobbs hoover from argos, within the first week whilst using the appliance on the attachements setting it burnt a hole in my stair carpet.i contacted russell hobbs customer service who arranged for the appliance to be collected for investigation, after a two week delay in the hoover arriving to the right location i received a letter to confirm that they had run the appliance through numerous tests and the outcome was that the hoover had burnt a hole due to my mis-use.this conclusion was obtained because when the hoover had been returned to them it was on the short pile carpet setting, not the attachements setting.i'm very angry regarding this due to the fact that i had asked them to compensate me in replacing the carpet(which i might add run's up first flight of stairs,on to my landing,up another flight of stairs and in to my attic room).regardless of what setting the hoover was on the burn should never of happened.also i feel they are implying i am of little intelligence and do not know how to use a hoover correctly, lying and trying to make a fraudulent claim, no of which are correct.i have disputed the outcome, obviously, with the help and advice of consumer direct but would value anyone's opinions and help i want to fight this all the way:mad:

This doesn't prove that it was on the short pile carpet setting when you hoovered the carpet though does it?
Either way , you would not expect this damage to happen just because it is on the wrong setting.
Is there a warning in the manual?
Which model is it?0 -
LoL. Dear Mr Rothenberger, I left my blow torch running and wasn't looking and it burnt the curtains. Please compensate me for the burnt curtains caused by your product.
Sorry - but I don't think so.

model no 13944 upright hoover, and no regardless of the setting it should not make any form of burn's.i forgot to put in the original post that as a goodwill gesture, even tho they have found no fault with the one i returned, they are replacing with a new one, joke, why would i want/use the same model hoover again.i am expecting for this to be a long drawn out experience and could very easily claim on my home insurance to make it easier and less hassle for me,but feel really strongly about it all and i know i have rights.0

99% it burnt the carpet because the brush at the front was rotating with it on short poile setting and you had it stationary on the carpet causing a friction burn. Attachments setting would prolly stop the front brushes rotating. Thats an operator problem not the machines fault TBH.

Did you leave it standing still in the same spot on the carpet when it was switched on?
I have seen warnings in some vacuum cleaner manuals about not doing this for the previous posters reason.
You need to know if this warning appears in the russell hobbs instruction manual.0 -

I agree. My wife did this exact thing on our stair carpet leading to me having to replace the whole lot:mad:
What may have happened. is that on some vacuums, the attachment setting does not stop the brush rotating, it just lifts it up. Unfortunately as a vaccum is wider than the tread of a stair, whilst you are holding it on the stair and using an attachment, it can 'rock' of the edge of the stair allowing the brush to come into contact with the stair nose, and if you don't notice, then this constant sweeping action in the same location will allow friction to build up and the carpet to burn or melt. This is what happened with my wife, and I suspect is what happened with the OP.

can i just say I DID NOT have it on the short pile setting i had it on the attachements setting,i switched the hoover on and within seconds i noticed the smell of burning. so for example if you had the hoover stationary and in an upright position on the attachements setting say to hoover along the edge of your carpet near your skirting boards this would cause the hoover to burn your carpet??????? was just a crap aplliance which has proved it's worth!!!0
