Sick Cat, No Insurance. Advice Please

We have a 10 year old cat whom we got as a stray. Not insured.
He developed a high fever this week and was very unwell. Took him to vets and he was given IV antibiotics and fluids as they thought he had a bacterial infection somewhere.
Estimate for an overnight stay (including meds) was £200-£250!! Had to leave him there as he was so ill and it was very late in evening.
Next day cat still not well. Kept another night, but only receiving fluids. Vet now thinks he has a virus. Can't give him any medicine for that.
Hoping to get him home today, but not sure what to do if he's still not well. Can't afford to keep him there at those crazy rates.
So difficult to tell if these prices are the going rate or we're being taken advantage of. Vet knows he's uninsured.
I'm not eligible for Blue Cross.
Any advice much appreciated.

Have you spoken to the practice manager about the possibility of paying by installments?
This is not usual practice for most vets, but, if you speak to them and explain your financial position, they may well allow you to pay the total bill in two or three lumps.
Our vet state that they have a strict 'payment on treatment, in full' policy. However, when we had to have our dog (also uninsured) operated on, we were quoted a bill of up to £500 which we did not have in one go. I spoke to the manager who agreed we could pay in two lots of £250. That was a great help.

R.i.P our beautiful girl Suki. We'll love and miss you forever
