HELP - Disaster with stain removing powder

Hi,
Yesterday I used Tesco Stain Removing Powder (+active Oxygen) on a stained Tablecloth but I made the mistake of putting the bowl on the wooden surface in the kitchen and now the wood has changed colour as some of the liquid leaked.

Can anyone suggest how I could bring the wood back to somewhere near the correct colour.
Please please help me - the kitchen looks awful & we've only been in the house for 3 weeks
Thanks
Jo
(didn't even get the tea stain out of the tablecloth either!!!)

ouch!! you may have to sand down the very top layer off the worktop then retreat with linseed oil, however someone here will probably have a less drastic way of dealing with itMember 1145 Sealed Pot Challenge No4

Try phoning Tesco's careline? If they have one the number will be on a Tesco packet. I don't have any Tesco products in the house at the moment so I can't tell you wnat it is (if they have one!).
I couldn't find a careline number on the website, but there is a customer service number: 0800 505555.
I know that Ornage Glo works really well, but
a) it's expensive
b) You probably want to try other routes first - once you have put the Orange Glo on, if it doesn' work, you'll have to get the orange glo off too.0 -
You'll have to sand it down as janeawej says. The stain remover was almost certainly acidic and it's effectively scalded the wood. I've got beech worksurfaces and this happens all the time
However, I wouldn't use linseed oil - it stinks and in a kitchen tung oil is best for work surfaces. Make sure you buy pure tung oil and not a product that "contains tung oil".
Thin the first coat with turps and apply several coats - the Chinese would probably apply about 30 coats  I don't think you need that many, but the more the better.
Tung oil provides the best water resistance, but I guarantee you'll stain the surface again at some point in the future and you might end up with simply living with it, rather than constantly restoring the work surfaceWarning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
ouch!!
That sums it up excellently!!
Thanks for the suggestions, I just rang Tescos, the girl on the end of phone seemed slightly confused by my question but said she'd have a look on their system & call me back. Not holding out much hope of a magical remedy though so I might go and invest in some sandpaper later!
Debt_Free_Chick - where can I get Tung Oil from?
I'll restore it this time coz we've only been here a while, but I imagine I'll get to a point in the future when I'll just give up and live with it when I make a mess
Oh well this'll teach me not to leave trailing wires (I tripped over the telephone cable which caused me to spill tea on the table cloth which I then needed the stain remover to remove!):mad:Feb 14 GC - £89.37/£3000 -

A good independent decorators merchant is your best bet. You might get it in B&Q, but read the label very carefully as there are plenty of mixtures that contain tung oil - and a load of other junk too.
A larger DIY store might stock Liberon Tung Oil, so that would be one to look out for.I'll restore it this time coz we've only been here a while, but I imagine I'll get to a point in the future when I'll just give up and live with it when I make a mess
Tell me about itI'm doing ours just once more, when we refurbish the kitchen next year.
BTW - Some people claim that with sufficient coats, tung oil will build up to a finish that is both water and alcohol resistant. However, anything acidic is likely to burn through even the deepest oil finish - so wipe away anything containing vinegar, if it spills onto the surface.
These fancy worktops look beautiful when new, but they're completely impractical for anyone who actually uses a kitchen! OK for those who live on takeaways or cook ready-meals in a microwaveWarning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -

Could you not make a claim on your contents insurance??
That way, you might be able to buy yourself a nice new table. When life throws you lemons...put them in a gin and tonic !!0 -
I can't use washing powder anywhere near my sink, in case it splashes onto the wood surface. If it does, and you dont notice it straightaway and wipe it clean, it leaves a dark grey stain.
Hubby wanted wooden worktops cos he says they look good, and they do, when they have just been sanded down. He says I am too sloppy, and if I wipe it up straight away its fine. Hmmm, when was the last time he did any hand washing in the sink, .............. about 1978 I think, obviously the voice of experience.
I am waiting for him to get fed up of sanding them down, then we can have nice granite ones instead!!!!!:hello:  please play nicely children !0 -
babyblooz - I do my hand washing in the bathroom sink. Could you try that?

Just want to let you know that I have got granite worktops which look gorgeous when they have just been stardropsed and microfibred to a brilliant shine, but they are an absolute swine to keep that way and show every mark and splash...Official DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!0
