Barclaycard charges refund

Hello,

Barclaycard have sold my account to a third party DCA's purchased debt portfollio. I recently applied for a refund on credit charges applied to my account- they agreed to refund them but said they had to apply the refund to the balance held by the third party.

My question is how do i get them to pay me the refund? in the past i dealt with banks who sent me a cheque (re charges) when the debt had been sold or the account closed. I understand that if the account was active with the bank that they would apply the refund to the account but in this instance the debt has been sold and the account technically closed (from the barclays end)?

thanks in advance

Usually you can't. They will almost invariably use any refund offered to offset the amount you owe, only offering you the actual money if the charges they agree to refund exceeds the amount you owe. (and then only the balance remaining after settling what you owe)

If they have officially sold the debt on and it isn't just a dca acting on their behalf then yes you can ask for the money to be refunded direct to you. State clearly in the letter that you since you no longer have an account with the company you expect any refund to be sent directly to you and you do not give permission for them to pass your money to any third party.
  • they could buy the debt back off the DCA and then apply the refund...

lenders do not buy back debts once sold.
