If you have an annual travel insurance policy, you should be able to claim on that. Remember, some banks include such a policy in their premium current accounts.
Not sure birth of a child is a reason to cancel that will be covered - particularly if it wasn't notified to the insurers.0 -
Sorry but the lodge is a business and what they are doing is very fair as they are trying to mitigate their losses due to a problem not of their causing. The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

It is disgusting that the proprieter wants to retain any of OPs money. You should get trading Standards invloved and let us close the place down. Also we get get the equalities commisioners on to this, this is no wayto treat a vulberable pregnant woman either.0

But Freddie - she isn't pregnant now is she - she had the baby prematurely.
OP - as heartless as it sounds, I do agree with others. This is a business and will be quite within their rights to charge you still for the room - subject to the wording of the terms and conditions.
As someone else has pointed out, you would have been around 36-37 weeks at the time of going. With full terms being 40 weeks, it is a fairly risky move "preparing" to be away so close.
I wish you luck with sorting this, and hope that either the hotelier is able to re-let, or has a sense of compassion and either lets you off, or decreases from 75% cost to something a bit lower and more "fair"0 -
I would have thought the Proprietor would have deducted the full deposit from the cost of the room for his 'special offer'. Seems he's only deducted £17. Tight git. :rotfl:There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.0

This is not a big hotel who might be able to swallow the loss. This is a tiny owner-run B&B with two bedrooms. You've wiped off half their income. I think they are being very nice and are trying to re-let it for you, but if they can't, it's entirely legal and morally fair for you to pay up.
1) You planned a trip so close to your due date. You weren't expecting a prem baby, but it happens. It's not fair for them to be penalised for this.
2) It's a small business running on tight margins - like any small business these days. They may have turned away other bookings for this date.
3) While I'm not casting any doubt at all on your reasons - people do make up all sorts of things to get out of contracts. You should hear some of the stories we get at our business, and sometimes we know full well it's total fiction. Rather than trying to distinguish who is telling the truth and who isn't, it's best just to stick to the policy for everybody and then that's fair. Also, you don't have to weigh up the issues - where do you draw the line? If someone broke their leg, do you let them cancel and lose your income? If someone's cousin twice-removed is in hospital, do you let them cancel and lose your income? If someone gets sacked, do you let them cancel and lose your income? Everyone who cancels has a reason for it....a small business like this can't just let them all off the hook.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -

The proleteriat detest private enterpise in all its guises. The poor OP was pregnant, that was not her fault. She had the baby early, that was not her fault. Now some greedy fat cat wants to wipe out her meagre existance and force her new born child to starve.
What planet are you on?0 -
