VGA (PC) to HDMI (LCD)

Right I got my replacement LCD TV from Argos as my first started to play up, so basiclly asked argos to replace the telly but something bigger on screen wise with the HDMI ready :) - but I lose the function of the VGA port on the faulty tv

So the replacement telly is set up like this:

* Xbox360 (Freebie from Tesco ;) ) hook to the LCD via the RCA connections on the back - set up for HD playback (wow!)
* Digi Box connected to the LCD via Scart 1 - (must stay)
* HIFI Unit connected via Scart 2 (can go...)

I have the following to spare

* S-VHS Input
* Video Input
* HDMI
* or a spare scart.

Now I need to hook up my PC to the telly somehow and which is the best way on doing this?

The following options I have
1: Buy a new graphics card with DVI output and buy a DVI/HDMI cable
2: Buy a VGA to Scart or VGA/HDMI Cable?
3: Send the telly back to Argos and look for something with VGA support?

Help!

    Along those lines, but you don't need a new graphics card. You can pickup DVI to VGA connectors quite cheap. So it's go:

    VGA Output --- VGA to DVI Convertor --- DVI to HDMI cable

    That's the way I'd probably do it. Then if you do get a new computer/graphics card you'll be set as you'd only need to take the convertor out.

    AFAIK DVI to VGA is easily done with a cheap converter (normally supplied with the graphics card) BUT VGA to DVI requires something a bit more expensive & getting a new video card would be a lot cheaper

    You can pick them up for about £10 if not cheaper if you look about. Have a look on maplin.

    You want a VGA (male) to a DVI (female) I believe.

  • Had a little hunt around the box before putting it into the loft and found a VGA to RCA (Green/Blue/Red) cable right down the bottom under the white stuff well hidden - tried this and it didn't work. Phoned argos for a replacement cable so now waiting.

    If the VGA - RCA works then I will have to source a Xbox to HDMI cable instead to get everything fully working.

    Thanks wolfman - my understanding that vga - vga/dvi converter -- dvi/hdmi cable will not work as the converter is bidirection to the format in the title ie can only work DVI to VGA only?? not VGA to DVI

    Hmm, actually yeah. Thinking about it, I think problems would arise trying to go from an analog signal to a digital one (for HDMI), but just via cables, which obviously can't convert a signal type.

    I know forms of DVI can carry analog signal, but HDMI is purely digital.

    In that case, it's probably easiest as mentioned above to pickup a £25 graphics card and get a DVI - HDMI cable.
