Fitting a ceiling rose

Hi, hope someone can help me with this.

I recently took down a rather large light fitting in my dining room & replaced it with a standard ceiling rose, which i didn't fix to the ceiling as it was due to be plastered.
I have just tried to fix it to the ceiling, but have found that the hole is too large & the screw holes on the ceiling rose are level with the hole leaving me nothing to screw into.

There is a very little ceiling right around the edge of the rose & i did consider gluing it into place, but am sure that this probably isn't safe with it being electrical, so any ideas as to how i can fix it to the ceiling please?

Normally light fittings and ceiling roses should be positioned so they can be fixed to a wooden joist which supports the ceiling. Screwing them only into plasterboard even with plasterboard fixings (assuming it is not Lath & Plaster!) is not a good idea! As you say the previous fitting was large and therefore probably heavy I would be very surprised if it was not fixed to a joist.
As you say there is a large hole (why not fixed when re-plastered?) have a look to see if there is a joist near. Turn off that lighting circuit! You can use a bit of stiff wire bent at right angles through the hole and swivel it round to find the nearest joist if you can't see it. If it is in the middle of the plasterboard consider repositioning it
If there is cut a piece of plasterboard to the size of the hole and fix to the joist or with a batten to adjacent plasterboard, then fix the ceiling rose in place.

Well who knows what they had the original light screwed into as definitely no joist above the hole. Think i'll have a go at moving it over slightly & screwing into the joist.
