And another thing to consider is that often the top 10 holdings only make up around 50% of the fund. I'd imagine quite often those smaller holdings would make a significant difference if left out.

[/Qbefore i saw the update from masonic i looked at some funds and thought about simply mimicking their top 10 holdings in equity.UOTE]

What if they sell one of those holdings and you are not aware of the storm cloud brewing and you don't sell?????
Oh dear. . This is getting too complicated. I'm dumping my money into an isa instead :) youre right of course it would mean watching the market like a hawk which is exactly what i'm trying to get away from . . Far too stressful.

Heh, funny you should mention them. I was introduced to the concept of ETFs on here some time ago and I'd been meaning to look into setting something up for myself. I think what makes them attractive to me is that I could use them to add diversity to my core portfolio of funds - they seem a good tool for getting exposure to specific sectors, which can sometimes be difficult with funds and too risky with individual shares. I guess since they are mostly passive funds sometimes with a narrow focus, they do need a bit more attention than actively managed funds and will probably tend to carry more risk when comparing like for like. It was well over a year ago when I last looked at what platforms were available for trading these and costs etc, so I'm probably well out of date as far as that's concerned.
