clueless about car insurance

hi there i have a few questions if someone can help me.
my car insurance is due for renewal end of nov and i have 3 points due to fall off in may.
when im getting a quote with a 4 yrs no claimes bonus, its coming up the same prices with or without the points. im putting them in to test this.

any reason? i thought it was meant to be cheaper if you have no points.

also my car is 10 yrs old and im just finishing paying the finance on it but its only worth £500 now. is it worth fully comp or should i just get third party.

im also thinking of changing it before feb as the mot runs out then and im not sure its worth it..
any advice?

With the advent of speed cameras 3 points is so common that a lot of companies ignore them.

On a £500 car I think you’d be hard pushed to find circumstances under which it would be worth making a claim when you consider next years additional premium, loss of NCB, excess etc so you could probably move away from fully comp.

The problem is the insurers have twigged this and now there is often little difference in cost between them.

I insure my dear old dads valueless fiesta for him and the cheapest is often FC but with a big voluntary excess which effectively makes it TP
  • thanks for your reply vaio.
the 3 points is for driving using a mobile
not sure if this makes much difference
    it just seems very expensive,
at the moment i pay £45 a month and cant actually find anything cheaper than this

Most points over three years old won't have any impact on your insurance, and the older points get the less impact they have. Some insurers don't really know how to deal with a CU80 (mobile phone offence) as they don't have enough data to establish any correlation between that particular endorsement and claims - unlike speeding, for example. Most insurers ask for five years of motoring convictions so it has to be disclosed anyway.

Unless you can afford to do without your car, or you can't afford comprehensive cover, comprehensive is the way to go. It puts your insurers in a much better position to deal with a claim, and the fact that your car is ten years old might well mean the TPFT and comprehensive premiums aren't too dissimilar.
