BT duped me into 12 month contract

But if the person in BT retail I spoke to told me this was not the case, isn't there some recourse?0

I had a dial tone. When you cancel a line they don't send someone to the exchange to disconnect the line, and then reconnect it for the next person, it's all done in software.
If possible, if anyone is still reading, I'd like to try to pull this thread back on track....
Fine, so if you had a dial tone there is no charge. That was all I was trying to establish. There was ambiguity because your original post said that the line needed 'hooking up'-which implied reconnection.
Nevertheless a new contract for line rental involves a minimum 12m term contract. If you can prove that you were told otherwise then you have a case for claiming mis-selling.No free lunch, and no free laptop
