I once went as a Space Punk which consisted of a black bin bag with head/arm gaps (of course). I wore thick fishnet green tights (from an RAF Fireman - part of their working kit) and I spruced the bin bag up with pins, locks, stars, tinsle and anything else odd and shiny, sprayed my hair silver  and wore boots similar to Doc Martins. I won a bottle of Champers as they were running a comp.0 -
Hello honey28
What about Mrs O?
If you're not a fan of Acorn Antiques...........I mean Mrs Overall played by Julie Walters. Why isn't she Dame Julie Walters?
You'll need to wear a hair net, a flower print wrap over pinny/overall with one yellow rubber glove pinned to it........at the front/waist.
Wear some thick (support tights?) denier tan coloured tights and put rolled up pieces of tissue down the legs...........to create the lumpy varicose vein Mrs O look.:D Wear the flattest most unattractive shoes you can find.
You'll also need a tray. Glue a plate onto the tray. Glue some (macaroons) biscuits onto the plate.
This fancy dress outfit will be relatively cheap and comfortable too. It will help if you can stoop and roll/hunch your shoulders forward too.
Remember to use Mrs O's catchphrase............."Oooh I am pleased".:D
Whatever you decide to wear, I hope you enjoy your party.

Pick something obvious, i.e. where people don't have to ask what you are supposed to be. It's best to do something with plenty of props because they help with identification and are easier to make out of household junk than costumes (as in clothes) are. Often people pick something that they think will be an eay costume because the mode of dress is quite ordinary but in that case you have to get it spot on or no-one will know who you are. For example if you go with Nile's suggestion you'd have to get it right or you'll just be some random old lady. If you choose someone/something with a more extreme look then it's much more obvious who you are so the costume is more likely to be a success.
Some costumes I have done in the past:
A cowgirl; Denim skirt, cowboy hat from toy shop. Toy rifle and cap gun both from pound shop and painted with humbrol in shade "gunmetal"
A playboy bunny; black basque, black fishnet tights, high heels. Black shorties with cotton wool tail sewed on an sprayed with loads of hairspary to prevent shedding. Collar and cuffs made from card and fastened with split pins (Prototyped in paper to work out necessary curves). Bow tie made from newspaper and painted black stuck to collar. Cuflinks made from salt dough and covered in foil stuck to cuffs. Ears made from wire for edging and covered with paper wired and taped to cheap Alice band.
A cheerleader; White vest top fabric paint "69" on reverse, short red shirt, red knee highs, plimsoles, hair in high bunches. Pom-poms from ponds shop.
Bride of Frankenstein; Wedding dress from charity shop. Face painted white with black lipstick, loads of eyeliner, stong facial contouring. Hair back combed into a sort of massive bee-hive type quif and pinned. White stripe sprayed either side, masked of with wavy strip of cardboard while rest sprayed black. Bouquet of flowers from pound shop, also sprayed black.
My housemate as Frankenstein: Wax scar running across forehead fixed in place with Copydex, flattened staples pushed in. Nut and bolt made from hexagons of corrugated card sandwiched together, several drinking straws taped together to form bolt and wrapped with string for thread. Covered in foil and wiped with black paint to age and bring up bolt thread. Glued to either side of head with Copydex. Green grease paint. Blood along and dripping from scar. Blood made using instant coffee, red food dye, water and sugar boiled to a syrup.
Morticia Adams; Black leotard with fringe of black bin liner attached with double sided sticky tape below elbow to form fringed sleeve. Skirt assembled onto black shorties. Circle skirt of black bin liner waisted at mid thigh. Black bin liner wrapped tightly round thighs, taped seam at back, taped to shorties. Flared circle section taped to tight upper section. Staightened hair, sprayed black. Make-up similar to bride of Frankenstein with red lips.0 -
Thanks for all those suggestions. I'm starting to look forward to it - I like the bluetits one but dont fancy explaining it to my kids (who are also going!)0

ha ha honey - glad you liked the idea anyway!;)
Good luck with whatever costume you choose and have a great time0 -
A friend of mine went as a mad surgeon, wearing a white doctors coat covered in splashes of red paint (blood), big rubber gloves & wellies (again covered in blood!!), stethoscope, and then got some bones from the local butcher to hang off his belt. All the kids were fascinated - especially when he kept getting a bag of raw liver out of one of his pockets ! Bleurgh0
