When to switch supplier without paying penalty

I have a contract with OVO until 16th Oct for gas and electricity. Can I start switching supplier now without paying for leaving or do I have to wait until then? I believe that it takes 6 weeks to change over completely so by that time it should be well after 16th Oct

to be on the safe side ive been told to do it 28 days before you old deal runs out...

cause you need to give 28 days notice anyway

so the change over wont happen until 28 days have passed...

It takes approx 6 weeks to do the change, but thats based on a fixed registration date that they take you from so it can be 6 weeks after your actual start date with them. The 6 weeks is just for all the data handovers between industry parties that is used to manage your meter point, contracting agents to read your meter, etc.

You sound like you might be business? If so, it will be in your t&c's but you need to be careful to avoid the "Deemed" contract rate issue which you get stuck on higher rates for a new contract because you didn't re-negotiate. .

wait it until the end date of the 16th and make sure you don't get put on another tariff that has a cancellation charge, that way you know you wont get charged.
