If debt-collectors come to the door I expect you'll need to provide evidence that you are not the named individuals they are chasing the recovery of debts from. A copy of your tenancy agreement showing when you took possession of the property would be handy, too. Don't forget that you should not allow them inside: just get them to wait outside the closed front door while you get your documents.

There is no way I would give out personal details to someone at the door claiming debts are owed! They have no more right than you or me to demand anything as they are just private citizens with no special authority.

I would just inform them that its too much hassle sorting out their post with work etc.. and so can they get the mail redirected. You could even get them leaflets on it from the post office then start sending stuff back. Although your not going to be held liable for their bills it may look a bit suspcious if mail has been arriving for someone else and you haven't sent it back as not at the address anymore. If they are up to anything dodgy you could be accused as part of it as your knowingly accepting mail for someone that doesn't live there. They may just be using you as a free alternative to paying for redirection. Either way they are taking advantage of your good nature and you really need to put a stop to it before it causes you problems.

When I move into a new place I open anything that looks like it might be a bailiff or creditor letter, call them and tell them that the person they're after no longer lives there, usually they had a fair idea that was the case anyway and just take my word for it. I know I'm not really supposed to open someone else's mail but it put a stop to most of the letters and I've never had a bailiff show up.
  • We moved into our house in July 2008 and we still get letters from various "solictors" and "debt recovery companies" they just go back where they came from - Return to Sender.

Oh... and some dude from MortgageExpress came knocking on our door about 12 months after we moved in chasing some arrears on a BTL property that the previous owners had a mortgage on. We just said to him that it might be a good place to start looking at the other property for them as they hadn't lived at our address for a year...

ME now owned by you & me (part of the old Bradford & Bingley empire that collapsed...). So, we all paid for the dude's journey. Hope he finds the little rat .....
  • Quote this at any little rat from some Bailiff company bothering you, if you are either entirely innocent or the debtor in question...

The Protection from Harassment Act 1997 makes it a Criminal Offence for any person to pursue a course of action "which they know, or ought to know, amounts to harassment of another person".
