Battery Not Recognised

Hi
I have an Acer 2490 Travelmate laptop and I have just bought a new battery, due to a warning on Windows 7 and also the fact the laptop is now four years old.
I have the replacement battery but I cannot get the laptop to accept it.
If i insert it I get a warning the battery is not an Acer battery and the battery is not recognised, and the organge light flashes on the front of the laptop and then is powers off, unless I remove the battery and leave it on the mains power.
I have read a few things on line and from what I have read it seems to be a problem with it being a new battery with a very low charge.
Has anybody come across this before and if they have, what did they do to get the battery up and charging.
Thanks
Martin

Turn laptop off, insert new battery, plug in the charger, leave for 12 hours.
That might condition the battery such that it will boot with it in situ.0 -
Try GRM's solutions first. If that doesn't work, try this:
Go to your power settings by right clicking on the Desktop and selecting Properties> click the Screen Saver tab> click Power.
Under Power schemes select select all of the choices to never.
Plug the power supply into the laptop and wait until it reaches 100% and stops charging..
Disconnect the power supply and let the laptop discharge completely until it hibernates.
Reconnect the power supply and let the laptop charge completely again, then go back into the Acer 2490 Battery power settings and resume the previous settings.
If that too fails, tey this:
Start the machine up on only AC (battery removed) and then slide the battery in once the machine is on.0
