I'm surprised that he doesn't get more than lower rate DLA because of his injuries tbh, but if that's what they've assessed, that's what they've assessed. However, more importantly, I want to ask what compensation this man is getting for what has happened to him.
This is the sort of person who should get a large compensation payout due to the exceptional circumstances under which he was injured. I don't know if the police have a scheme of that sort, if not then compensation should be in line with the armed forces.
He will get a compensation payout and it sounds like he is still on full pay as he said he is hoping to go back to work.
If he doesn't go back to work, he will get a police pension in addition to any non means tested benefits he is allowed, such as the ones he is claiming now.
From the article
"He revealed on Twitter that it was "somehow not fair" that he had been awarded the lowest band, £18.95 a week. The Northumbria Police officer is understood to be getting a higher band for the care component of his Disability Living Allowance."
According to government website, that is £71.40pw high band DLA plus £18.95pw low rate mobility plus his police salary.

I think the system is somewhat fairer for him than a majority of others.
Read into that what you will but I am sure financially he is a lot better off than most.
That is not to say a payment of £18 is enough...........Not Again0 -

i feel very sorry for him and also his family.
i don't think you join the police force expecting to be blinded by some nutter.
possibly he is doing this to raise awareness?
i expect he will receive a large compensation payout and also money from newpapers for selling his story.
none of that can really replace being able to see though.
i'd like to see the benefit payouts a bit higher (but means tested). however, i think in terms of level of mobility they've assessed him correctly. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -
No, the article said he wrote it on Twitter. How the hell is he writing on Twitter?0

It's a high profile injury. Therefore he is able to use it in this way and sell the story.
Now, I MUST say, I do feel for him. No one wants any frontline person injuredm and he was very brave to do what he was doing.
However....so are other frontline personnel, and they get no more than he is, he is just able to use his high profile story as leverage to make his point.
The system has to be fair to all. He can't have more than someone else doing the same thing just because he was involved in the moat saga.
The way he states he is now ready to do battle with the DHSS, and the way he's describing how it's unfair, and is using his high profile puts me off a little.0 -
There used to be a blind man up the road from me where I used to live. He was always out and about, on buses... reading his braille paper. He knew when to get off the bus OK, I used to get off at the same stop and would see him walking down the road with his little stick.
Certainly very mobile, just couldn't see around him.0 -
