Halifax - Paying in a cheque?

Options
Does anyone else use the envelopes and the 'letter box' type thing to deposit cheques? If yes do you know when they should bank the cheques?

In the past we 'posted' some cheques and went down to the branch the following morning to see why they had not reached the bank account. Cashier emptied the post box and payed the cheques in - backdating them by one day.

Yesterday my mum posted three separate cheques (all for different accounts) before 2pm yet they have only appeared in the accounts today!

  • When I've done this they are usually in that evening, or first thing the next morning at the latest.

Sounds like the staff at your branch are sloppy and need a kick up the bum.
  • It is two separate branches - at least the first backdated the cheques but that was probably because we were in the branch when they emptied the 'post box'.
  • abbey has a cut off time which I think is 3.30 p.m. so you have to get it in the box by then to have it credited the same day. Otherwise it is the next day.

How are you checking if they are showing? With many banks (though I cant say for HBOS particularly) things like the online and ATM methods of seeing the balance are not actually done in real time and so even if the central banks computer shows a transaction it can take hours (or even until the next day) for the transaction for it to show.

  • They should be checked and emptied regularly

if she asks in branch they can confirm what has happened
  • I've always checked mine online.
  • I checked online yesterday - will have another look today and see if the date has changed.

    Thanks everyone for your comments.
