Withheld numbers keep calling

Hi,

As of late I have been receiving calls from withheld numbers. I am registered on TPS, silent call guard, the number is also ex directory. Can BT trace these numbers at all?

Please can someone let me know,

Thanks

The number is always available, just not to you the recipient, it probably is an auto dialler that is calling your number and from abroad.
Being ex directory only deducts your number from public directories.
A company you have dealt with and passed your number onto may have passed on your number to a 3rd party :o

OK I thought BT might be able to track it down. It always calls around the same times each day.

You could get anonymous call rejection added to your line, so the caller would get a message 'this line doesnt accept calls without CLI' and your phone wouldnt ring...costs upto a couple of ££/month though (depending on the provider)

They could, but more than likely won't, as the other poster suggested, subscribe to ACR , will save a lot of fuss n bother (although the witheld calls may transfer to your mobile :o)
  • Hi

Does ACR block all withheld numbers? If so then that could be an issue be I know some people who withhold their numbers. Guess I could just email BT and and see if they could block that number from calling again.

Those people can dial 1470 to force their CLI through on calls to you.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Only if they are calling from a residential line and the number withhold is pre-programmed. If they are calling from behind a switchboard, for example the hospital, then 1470 doesn't work. Some switchboards still have a "get round" number but most dont. I for one wouldn't risk missing calls off the hospital - you never know who might be ill or taken in as an emergency.

What you need is a BT add on service called "Choose to refuse". After an anonymous call comes through you dial a number and this blocks that particular number from calling again, irrespective of whether they withhold their number next time - "The person you are calling is not accepting calls from this number". You can block up to 10 numbers, and you can hear them listed by date and time, and cancel the blocks if needed. You cant always block overseas numbers though. There is a fee for this service but its usually free for the first month if BT know you've been experiencing problems. I used it once before when my ex kept calling from various numbers when he was drunk. We blocked his mobile, his parents house and then various withheld ones which i assume were call boxes or his mates homes. You never get to find out what the numbers are, but you can still block them. Perfect solution and won't stop your genuine friends calling from withheld numbers. You'll probably only need it for a month anyway, by which point your night-time caller should get bored and give up.

    Hope this helps.
  • Hi All,

    Many thanks for your responses,

Unfortunately the problems are still occurring and are now mostly International Callers, which most of them I don't bother answering but these calls can happen 2 times a day which is annoying I have answered a few of these calls and all I can hear in the background is lots of people talking so this is most likely to be a call centre but I get no response and then phone cuts off.

I have been in contact with BT who have advised that most International Calls numbers are not known to the BT network so they would not be able to block these calls because they don't have the callers number. I am currently registered on TPS and Silent Call Guard.

I would appreciate it if someone could offer any more advice.

    Many thanks

you need to get your self a Truecall unit, they block all international and unavailable numbers without you phone even
    ringing

    http://www.truecall.co.uk/,

click on the link above and have a read of what the unit really does it's packet with loads of features.

go to Amazon or e-bay you can pick one up cheaper than going direct to truecall

    good luck
