Advice needed please!

Hello!
In June 2010 I took out a car insurance policy with the RAC. It was my first policy with them, prior to this I had a one year policy of my own with directline and before that I was a named driver on my parents policy with direct line. For all of the time I was with directline I had built up No Claims Discount, as they allow named drivers to do this. However, when I applied for my RAC insurance I didn't realise they would not accept named driver NCD. I paid a premium based on having 5 years NCD but later found I could only prove the 1 year I had as a policyholder with direct line.
However, the RAC had send me a letter assuming that I actually had 0 NCD and it clearly stated that although my policy had been ammended the cost of my insurance WOULD NOT CHANGE. A month later I get a letter saying I'm going to be charged an extra £154 which will be taken from my account. I phoned them up to query this and was told its because my NCD had changed.
This infuriates me because even though I paid my premium as a lump sum they still assume they can just dip into your account, and, they had already sent me a letter saying my premium WOULD NOT CHANGE! To be honest, I was surprised to get the letter saying the cost wouldn't change, as I assumed it would go up, but nevertheless, I've got the letter!
Can anyone give me some advice on how to word my complaint that I am going to write to them. I seriously don't want to lose £154 because I'm currently out of work and that is alot of money to me right now.
Any advice appreciated. Thanks

  • Whe you change insurer, you would have to show the new insurer proof of your no claims discount and comply with their terms. You declared that you had 5 years in your name, but you were a named driver on you mums policy and obviously this was her car. I do not think this is transferrable. I was until a year ago a named driver on the wife's policy, we changed policy provider and had to within 4 weeks provide them with proof of no claims.

I would doubt the insurer would have sent a letter sayin the cost would not change, the cost you were given at the time of purchase assumed you had the correct no claims discount.

You could of course talk to them and show that you have had a good record for the years you were on your mums policy and show additional things to prve you are a good and competant driver, such as a 'clean licence' or an advanced driving course.

Remember, if you do not ask you will not get.

Please remember though, your insurance would be declared invalid if you do not contact them and sort this out,
