NYC - EWR Air Train/NJ Transit to Penn Street Station

We (3) are flying into Newark Airport (Saturday in October) landing at approx 7pm and are staying in Madison Square Gardens. We will only have 2 suitcases.
We have looked at getting a taxi but looks as though this might cost about $80 inc. tips/tolls/taxes.
Can anyone give me your opinion/tips on EWR Air Train/NJ Transit to Penn Street Station and then walk the 5 blocks to our hotel - this looks to be a faster and cheaper option ($37.50) but obviously don't want to do this if it is awkward.
Your help and advice would be greatly appreciated - Rae x

Hi there
Please see the New York Forum https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2230655 If you do a search you should find information to help you
I have done this from JFK with no suitcases ( Day trip to washington) and found it to be fine however not sure if I could do it after a longhaul flight. If you havent been to NY before i'd say the experience of getting a taxis and entering the city for the first time for me was amazing.New York ♥..........These street will make you feel brand new, Big lights will inspire you.
No place in the world that can compare ♥ 2nd October 2010 ♥0 -

Penn St station is underneath Madison Square Gardens so I think you can go there directly without walking along the street.0 -
Did this a couple of years ago after flying Belfast to Newark. It was very straight forward, not a problem at all.0

Myself and Mrs Baker did this a few years ago. We were staying in a hotel Downtown and we just hopped on the subway after getting of the NJ Transit train into Penn Station. An absolute doddle. This space has been intentionally left blank0
