We've got a red cable and a black cable going in to the meter and a red cable and a black cable coming out and going to a smallish black box. From this black box there are two cables going to the fuseboard. One is blue and one brown. There's quite a lot going on in a small space, so I might have missed something, e.g. there are also green and yellow striped cables coming out and going to another even smaller black box - but this is just earthing, isn't it, so I don't suppose it's relevant. And, yes, the two digit number is 02.

Thank you again for being so helpful.

2 tails from your fusebox to the meter then. So, sounds set to E7. If you no longer use night heating so you rewired, then the timeswitch would not click them on but you would still get night units charged for anything considered 24 hour power for example lighting.

  • An update for those of you who are interested in such things.

Meter changed for digital single rate meter today. Installer said that it wasn't malfunctioning and had been altered at some point in the distant past to deliberately only record on the normal (day) rate dial.

So, even though the previous residents were with Npower and on a single rate and even though I told them that only the one dial moved when I rang to tell them we'd moved in, they still put us on an E7 rate.

I just need to get them to alter our dd back down to a more reasonable amount now. Hoping this will be straightforward but not holding my breath.

If you complaint they will re-bill on a suitable tariff, and can base DD reassessments on that.

Ah, so an engineer had pulled out the night then? Thats pretty rare and not something that should be done!

Not all meters are supportable on 1 rate charge with 2 rates as engineers should know so at some point, a dody engineer has been out there!

Tell them all this and tell them you only use 1 rate. The Supplier should have spotted this even with the previous tenant because in this case only 1 dial has been moving. This would very quickly be flagged as a faulty timeswitch and any meter readers going out there should have reported as well.

Stick to your guns and tell them to backbill you on 1 rate, but before you do it...work out whether E7 was better for you or not. Use the % split rule quoted in earlier posts for a general rule.

The Supplier, has a different situation here now. If your meter is compatible with 1 rate charge on 2 recording registers, they can just change your tariff this way up to the meter change. To know this, they look at your meter details from the Meter Operator and look at your region, a code with your meter called Standard Settlement Configuration (SSC) and then see if your Profile Class (PC) can be 1 or 2. If it can, they can bill you either way. If your PC is only available as PC", then they can't so it's complaint & fudging time. Ask them to check this and don't let them fob you off since not all call centre staff will understand this as it's a bit specialised.

If your meter does not support this, they won't have a tariff so will have to "fudge" your billing and they may be less inclined to do it...but just force them. If they have been getting reads, they would have seen all this!

  • That's very useful to know, thank you again.

The engineer actually said that the timeswitch had been disconnected and that the earth wire that wasn't connected to anything would have gone to the timeswitch when it was there. I feel a bit stupid now, but never having had an E7 set up before, I didn't realise there should have been something else there if it was a functioning E7 meter.
  • Another update.

That was early October. I am STILL waiting for them to sort the bill out and redo our dd! I've given them two readings and they keep saying that they'll recalculate, no problem. Last time I was told it would definitely be done by end Dec and now they say they've referred it to some team or other and today I got a request for yet another reading. I've tried to ring but haven't got through.

I am very much NOT impressed.
