Wanna buy an Irish number plate (JUI ****) off web. How long & how much to transfer?

Hi all

As the title says, we are looking to buy an Irish number plate (JUI ****) for a BMW we are going to buy soon. Partners first 3 letters of name are JUL, so it's a good thing. Anyway, I wanted to ask some questions and get some answers and verify some quotes from a trader. So, here goes...

Trader told me "If you have already bought a private number plate and you have the certificate for it, I can transfer the number to your car the same day". Is this true? and if so, does this apply to Irish number plates?

This plate costs £85 to buy as advertised. Are there likely to be any hidden or extra charges?

How much do the DVLA charge to change from the vehicles existing number plate (MM05 ***) to the Irish number plate (JUI ****)

Because this plate is Irish (JUI ****), does this make any difference at all with regard to:

Insurance on the car?
Cost of transfer?
Or anything else I should know?

Thanks all....

JUI **** isn't an Irish plate. It's Northern Irish- a UK plate.

    Transfer should be fairly easy.
  • Hi

Yes, I had an idea it was NI, but still wasn't sure if there were any special conditions. Thanks for your help.

This may help. Transferring from NI shouldn't take much.
  • Hi

Thanks for this, but this talks about transferring it from one vehicle to another. I have not bought the vehicle yet. I wanted to buy the number plate first with its 'Certificate' and just keep it until I had purchased the car!

    Thanks for your advice

    Does this help?
  • When you buy the plate, you can get a retention certificate. When you want to apply the registration number to a car, the quickest way is to go to your local DVLA office with the car details (log book I think), the current tax disk, and your retention certificate.

You have to wait for it to be done, but in Glasgow DVLA office this is the shortest queue!

They then issue you with a new tax disk with the new registration number. Your updated log book is sent through the post. I think this process costs £80.

You can then attach your new disk, fit your new number plates (I got mine made up before-hand) and that’s you ready to go.

Make sure you let your insurance company know that you are changing the registration number
