Hi all
Partner is buying a BMW X5 (05 Reg, approx 50,000 miles). After looking at lots of garages and lots of private sales it is clear that the garage price is from £500 to £1,000 (Car is about £15,000) more expensive than an identical car from a private seller. Of course I am aware that the garage has overheads etc, and that they offer a warranty. So, we are leaning towards a private seller, but I am aware that if anything major goes wrong with the car then there is little recourse. So, a friend advised us about these used vehicle warranties you can buy off the web. So, I input all details of the car into their form and it came back with a MASSIVE list of what is covered. It looks VERY impressive and came in at £550. The company is www.warrantydirect.co.uk. They have a lot of good press and even have a recommendation from honest john. They have other recommendations too. So, my questions are.............
Are these warranties any good if it comes to claiming, or do they try and wriggle out of a claim.
How can a company offer a warranty for a car they have NEVER seen?
The company looks very good and for £550, I'd say that is an excellent price for a 12 month warranty.
In fact, it sounds too good to be true.
Any advice please??

dont waste your £550 these warranty companies are sneaky beggars (i have dealt with most) the get out clause is wear and tear
have the car inspected by a reputable outfit (who will garuntee their findings) and put money aside each month for repairs.0 -

I would strongly recommend buying the car from a reputable dealer with a cast iron dealer backed warranty (ie, not a third party)
In fact i'd go so far as to say to try to buy one off a BMW main dealer and get the proper BMW warranty - even if it means spending more.
X5's are complex beasts - even an apparently simple fault could run into ££££'s.
FSH and evidence of main dealer history would be vital on a car like this.0 -
My ex had a one from Warranty Direct. They have a list of covered parts but also say that they will cover repairs to any other components that are damaged if the listed part fails.
Her car's water pump (listed part) failed catastrophically on a motorway and by the time she had noticed (probably only minutes) the engine was wrecked.
Despite three independent mechanics diagnosing the problem as a failed water pump, before they would decide whether to pay out or not they insisted that the engine was removed and completely dismantled ready for their engineer to inspect it to determine the cause of failure. This all had to be paid for in advance out of her own pocket and there was no guarantee that they would pay her anything. They didn't.
I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole... despite all the glowing testimonials from satisfied customers on their web site.
