vinyl in living room

We currently have laminate flooring in our living room and it has had it's day. It has been down about 6 years and needs replaced. Carpet is not suitable as have a lot of traffic through the room and would never be able to keep a carpet clean with kids.

Thought of tiling but not sure if I really want it that them, do not want laminate again and cannot afford realwood floor so was thinking of vinyl.

I have never seen anyone with vinyl in a living room and when I mentioned it to my neighbour she looked horrified:eek:
The thing that worrys me is moving suite to clean under it , will it damage vinyl ? I do not have vinyl anywhere as kitchen and bathroom tiled and everywhere else laminate or carpet.

Is vinyl suitable for a living room ?

  • Funnily enough I was also considering this. We currently have laminate (horrible cheap stuff that came with the house). I've seen some vinyl tiles from homebase in a parquet pattern and they look great and seem to be pretty hard wearing from the samples I have stuck on the floor. Will wait to see who else replies as I'm also interested in whether they will be damaged by moving furniture etc.
  • There's vinyl and there's vinyl. A thin vinyl will probably look terrible, but a cushioned vinyl with an embossed pattern in it (like a wood grain) could look quite good. Karndean is basically a vinyl, fitted in strips, there are plenty of others out there too. Visit a good flooring company and have a look at what's on offer.

Have a look at the Rhinofloor website, they have room settings which show vinyl being used in a living room, some of them look really good imo. Might give you some ideas?

    thanks for replies

I would not be getting a cheap thin vinyl as I know it will wear quicker. Think we will go at weekend and have a look at some,
