Keep getting messages...

Hi,

I'm a newbie and I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section but I couldn't find anywhere where it might legitimately belong.

I keep getting the same message left on my answer machine from an unlisted number which is a recorded message but made to sound like a genuine message. I've got 5 of these messages saved on my answer phone and it's identical everytime, same voice inflections, language etc.

It says, 'Hello this is Julie calling from HPL Customer Service, I'm just calling with reference to the vehicle you bought off ourselves a couple of years ago. If you would like to give us a call on 01928 752293 or alternatively we'll try and catch you another time, thank you.'

I've lived at this address for the past 15 years and I've NEVER bought a vehicle from anyone and neither has anyone at my address as I've lived alone all that time. I don't even have a driving licence.

I've tried looking up the number on reverse look up sites around the internet but nothing comes up and I have looked up HPL Customer Service as well and have found a company that sells cars in Manchester but nothing much else came up.

Has anyone else had any experience of this? Is it a scam to get people to buy something or anything like that?

Thanks

Jax xx

As it's a local number just call back and ask why they're phoning you. Only give your landline details and don't say anything other than you want to know why they're phoning. Don't give out your name, or address etc. Perhaps they've got a miss-type in their system, perhaps someone's lied about their motor. You wont know till you ask.

I wouldn't bother at first but 5 messages later I would want to know what the fuss is all about!

By far the most likely explanation is a wrong number. You have a number to call. Why not call it? Or simply ignore.

  • Whatever you do, when they ring again, do not press 9 otherwise you will conected to an international number charged at £2,000 a minute. I had one of these idiots ring me and my phone bill went through the rroof.

No, if you are not at fault, it is probably a wrong number.
  • If it's a new phoneline - sounds like you've got a badly recycled number. Ours is the bane of my life as it previously seems to have belonged to some woman who ticked the "Please phone me with anything and everything promotional ever" box on the entire planet. After two years of "there is no one at this number by this name please amend your records" - I'm now just call screening everything because I've had enough.
