Can one send private messages?

Options
I have tried to send some private messages to some people, especially where their postings were old and I did not know if they were still following the thread.

I can get access to their contact details and write a message to them but, when I press the send button I do not get confirmation that I sent the message and when I go to the "sent" link, no messages appear as sent. So I do not know if they have been sent. Is there a restriction on sending messages? do they need to be checked by the site? I would not think that the moderators (are there any) would spend the time checking messages as there are so many.

If the private message is actually sent, will they be notified through their own e-mail? The problem is the uncertainty as to whether they even got the message if they do not reply.

Thanks

Copies of any sent PM's should be in your 'Sent Items' folder (you'll need to click the drop down menu under 'jump to folder'. :)

This site does not have moderators (it has an abuse team as it operates on an 'alert and react' policy)

Whether a user gets sent an email will depend on the recipient user's own account settings (if such an option is offered)

Some users elect not to receive PM's, but if they haven't prevented the receipt of them and you send one, there is no guarantee they will read them let alone respond. If the receipient hasn't been on MSE for a long period, don't expect a reply (although you may be lucky and get one).
You can check when a user was last active on MSE from their user profile.
