I have a faulty Dell Vostro 1000 .... The laptop is I think dead ... If iI purchased another used vostro 1000 laptop off say eBay could I just slot in my 120gb memory and all my stuff would be on it??
I am sure it would not be sooooo easy ... but worth a ask:j

if the hard disk is working, yes, or you could just buy a usb caddy costing around £4. Swapping the hard disk to another machine would probably fail windows validation though.
how is it dead, how old is it?!!

The vostro is about 3 years old, I like it tho always done really well with no problems until now. It does not even power on or anyhting. I just thought I may be able to get a cheap vostro off ebay and put the 120gb hardrive in and off i go... I could buy another laptop for around £350 but I'm being tight,lol0

no lights on it at all, any lights on the power supply, tried it without the battery in? Does the power connector feel firm?
Does it power up if you put any pressure on the keyboard?#!!

Hi mate ... Theres no lights that come on the laptop at all with or without the battery with the power lead in. What I have found is that with the power lead just connected to the mains the green light is on the power adapter but when I press that into the laptop itself the green light on the power adaptor goes straight off, Any ideas then???
No power even with pressure ion the keyboard..0 -
Seems to be a common problem on that laptop, if you google it. Probably motherboard, sometimes they flex which is why I suggested pressing down on various places on the keyboard, the other weak spot is the power connector. You could take it apart carefully to see if you can spot any motherboard damage.!!

If all the hardware is exactly the same yes fine -had my work machine die on me the other month and when IT eventually got round to turning up to help just had my HDD swapped into a new chassis.
if any internal components are actually different you might have some minor driver faffing to do but again should be fine
