Claiming Bank charges

Hi

I recently sent a letter to Lloyds claiming all my standing order/direct debit charges back for the past 4 years. I have received a reply stating that I can only claim back default charges and not for charges relating to charges for being overdrawn etc
They say that according to their legal experts the OFT's guidelines on credit card default charges do not apply. They say that the fees they charge are not any kind of default penalty.

Has anyone else received a letter as such and is there any truth in the above?

    I'm sure if you threaten small claims court etc!
    Isn't the knowledge that comes from experience more valuable than the knowledge that doesn't?
