Are electronics cheaper in Hong Kong?

Options
I've got a stopover in Hong Kong early next year and I'd heard from someone who lived there (about 5 years ago now) that electronics and things like that were a lot cheaper to buy there.

Does anyone have any experience of this? Is that really the case anymore?

My sister goes to Hong Kong quite alot and has bought many stuff over the years.

She said that the stuff isnt that cheap anymore, even counterfeit stuff is hard to find (it was easy years ago).

She bout a sony cybershot camera and saved herself about £50 off of the price over here but the price was over £200 anyway.

I've been over a few times, and yes I think things are cheaper, especially as you can haggle.

Certain things are a bit more cheaper. I find high end camera equipment cheaper out there for example. However stuff like MP3 players, not much of a difference.

However often you will find they only offer local warranties on the goods.

Also remember your duty free allowance is only limited to c.£160 when coming back to the UK.

Electronic items are only a little cheaper than here in the UK - not like in the good old days. However, they do have the latest models out there. And you don't have to worry about HK-style plugs and adapters as they are the same as ours now.

Beware of rip-offs. The shops in Tsim-sh-Tsui are NOT a good place to buy anything: you may agree a good price, but what goes in the box may then not be what you thought you were buying; and many of the standard attachments may turn out not to be included. Another scam: you agree a price and wait for your chosen product to come from the back of the shop. While you are waiting, they show you something else. And surprise surprise, your purchase never comes, but you are basically a captive audience for the hard sell for something that will be worse value.

In sum: find out where Hong Kong residents shop, and go there. And be aware of possible issues around warranties and after-sales service.

Yes if you go to the night markets and you dont mind un branded IE not Sony then you can get things alot cheaper...

If you want branded things then it can be cheaper though not such a big difference, but they seem to have newer models some of the time for the price of the old model back in the uk...
