Finance Travelling..

Options
I am at college doing an access course for a year.
Unfortunately i cannot drive and its about a 15 mile journey to my college that does my course.
My only option would be to get a train which costs between £500 and £600 for the year, as i only need it from Portsmouth - Chichester. Is there any funding available for for this?

Thanks for the help
Liam

  • Is the £5-600 for an annual season ticket?
An annual season ticket, for 52 weeks, will not be worth buying in your situation as you will only need to travel for the weeks when the college is operating say until next June.
Can you buy a weekly season ticket using a young person's rail card?
Sorry I don't know if there are any sources of finance available but you could ask at your college as I feel certain that the college will have been asked this question before.
  • Well i am 21 but suppose it would be worth getting a weekly one, just a bit frustrating as im only in college 3 days a week.

Will you be only going into college three days a week or will you be going in more than that? Will you be travelling at peak time?

If you are only going to be going into college three days a week then it'll be cheaper to buy daily tickets - it's £6.90 for an anytime return and £25 for a week ticket.

I don't think there are any grants you can get for your travel though your college may have information about any local schemes.
  • Will be travelling there about 8.15am and coming back about 4pm, these will be on the days of wed, thurs and friday.

    Kind Regards

What are you doing access to achieve? If you are using it as a stepping stone to Uni, are there other closer options such as pre entry evening classes? I realised after doing a year's access that I could have got on to my course by doing the Uni I eventually ended up at's pre entry course which ran 2 nights a week, as opposed to 4 days a week doing Access. Just a thought, it's a big outlay on travel.

  • Since you are travelling at peak time there is little other option apart from a weekly or monthly season ticket, although do sit down and work out whether it is cheaper to buy that or to buy returns for the three days. A season ticket will allow you more flexibility if you are wanting to use it to travel the line on other days as well.

A 16-25 railcard is also an option, but useless for season passes since they don't discount them.
  • When I did my access course, there was a college access to learning fund where if your income is low enough you could claim for childcare and travel expenses.
  • Why are you doing the access course at Chichester rather than at Portsmouth or one of the other Hampshire colleges? What sort of access course is it?

I don't think Chi College have a transport fund these days, as my authority deal with most of their pupil transport, up to the age of 19. We'd also not help as it's cross-border.

Have you got anyone for a carshare maybe? I'm sure there's one or two who come in from that route. Before I moved, I did and we had a carshare of 4 people.
