Using coupons not intended for the item

Hi all

Sorry if I've posted in the wrong bit but I'm a noob so be nice lol :)

I just wondered if anyone could shed a bit of light on this?

Today I was in a supermarket (I'd rather not say which one) and I was using the self service check out. I'd been told that the the some of the supermarket's vouchers (in this case 50p off Tropicana) will come off any item purchased, so I tried it and it worked. The checkout woman said I was 'naughty' for doing that and it was fraudulent. I just said the till accepted it as tender and I've got a receipt. Am I actually doing anything wrong? Just wondered for future reference as I know a few people that use the vouchers.

Thanks in advance.

If its against their terms and conditions then yes you are doing something wrong.

  • Some supermarkets accept manufacturer vouchers, whether or not you buy the product, and some are more fussy.
None of them will accept their own vouchers without buying their product though..
  • I certainly do it from time to time; I use my loyalty card and debit card so am not trying to hide anything, and haven't had any problems yet.

Waitrose staff let you redeem any voucher (provided they stock the product and you're actually doing your shopping of course) regardless of whether you've bought that particular item or not. No skin off their nose. They get the money back from the manufacturer. The checkout person's opinion may well differ from management policy, so if you want to do this in future at the same supermarket, why not ask to speak to the manager or someone in customer services.

  • Now I may be simple country folk but if a voucher says 50p off tropicana, I do think that there voucher is offering you a discount on a product in the "Tropicana" range of those lovely fruit juices, and I would think on the back of that there voucher, it clearly states in it's T&C's it's only for buying Tropicana, hell it might not even say that because it's so damn obvious they assume people will understand it. However since the company will be refunded themselves, they shouldn't really give a damn.

Here's a voucher for £10 off at Sainsburys....I know..I'll use it at M&S! Wait...what!? You guy don't accept Sainsburys vouchers!? Oh...because they're for Sainsburys only you say? Hmm....I don't understand that...surely vouchers can be used for anything, like they have an actual cash value of that amount and not 0.001p!?

I was under the impression that Waitrose stopped taking coupons if you hadn't bought the correct item I believe they clamped down at the end of January after every man and his dog started mobbing Waitrose after Tesco clamped down on coupons!!!

I'd LOVE to be told I'm wrong about this.
