Intenal is best.
Go for a Pioneer, NEC or Sony - all have good compatability with discs.
Can't recall modem numbers, but I'd recommend shopping at SVP Communications.0 -

Having had a Sony drive which lasted all of about 6 weeks, I would suggest you don't bother. There drives have some 'issues' which they find difficult to admit too, but if you do some searching on sony dvdrw they become apparant. I contacted Sony and asked about a replacement and where to send their defective unit to. However, they weren't to bothered and expected me to return the drive for their inspection which would take in the region of 28 days and would be done so at my own cost.
I decided to replace it, so chose a NEC which used to be considered very reliable, but that drive broke after 4 months.
Since then I chose http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=1055 and am happy to say that this drive has been going strong with daily burns. And unlike the other drives, as of yet hasn't given me any errors\coasters.
HTHIt could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -

You will be wanting USB2 connectivity.
it should be DVD±RW, its not worth buying just + or -, it will not cost any more, but ± means you can use either type of dvd rw.
The ability to read/write dvd ram is not needed, its a nice adition, but dvd ram disks are rarely used. (I am aware pcworld sells them, but I have no idea why)
Dual layer is a tough one, you do really want the ability to write them, but the disks are exceptionally expensive so you are not likely to use it in the long run.
As for lightscribeWikipedia wrote:The purpose of LightScribe is to allow users to create direct-to-disc labels (as opposed to stick-on labels), using their optical disc writer. Special discs and a compatible disc writer are required. After burning data to the read-side of the disc, the user simply turns the media over and inserts it with the label side down. The drive's laser then etches into the label side in such a way that an image is produced.
Hope this helps0
