two immersion switches - water cylinder

Hi,

I have just moved into a flat (approx 4 years old)

I have a query over which immersion switch to use for my hot water cylinder and would appreciate advice. I have a range tribune cylinder. There is an immersion switch 2/3rd of the way up the cylinder and one near the bottom.

I thought the bottom one should be used so that it would heat via economy 7 - but this flat is on Southern Electric General Domestic tarrif.....
So do i need to have the bottom one and therefore heat the whole cylinder ? or should i just use the top immersion to heat only the top part of the tank given that no economy 7 in the flat?

as i say would appreciate any comments
cheers

As you surmise, the top one usually heats a few litres of water - sufficient for washing up, shaving(chin or legs as appropriate) etc, but not sufficient for a bath.
