Help! What's the best / cheapest broadband?

Hi,
Can anyone help? I'm looking to get Broadband as I think it will be quicker and better than my current old-fashioned and rather slow dial up.
I've been looking at the deals that BT are offering, including £50 back but I really don't know if I need everything they offer. I have no kids and don't play online games. I just want to be able to use the internet for an OU course that I'm doing, look at emails and this site (of course!).
Anyone know what a home hub is and if I need one? I'm not bothered about using my computer all over the house. Also, what is a hub phone for?
Sorry to sound so thick - I am finding it all confusing and the BT website doesn't give any information.
One final question - how do I decide how much I will download in a moth - 2mb, 8mb or 40 Mb? If I just read stuff without actually downloading it, will that come off my allowance from BT?
Does anyone know if there are any better deals out there?
Thanks a billion!!
Savings now at £4,000 - one ISA and a building society. Credit cards banished forever!

bt is rarely the cheapest, see the internet access board for other advice.

if you are using dial-up, 2MB should be fine (for now).Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Thanks for that!0

I've just recently switch to Eclipse Internet. They are doing a deal at the moment, where you get the 1st 3 months at 9.99, the remaining 9 months on the contract are 14.99.
You get a free modem and mircofilters included.0 -
Cheapest is not always best.
You might want to have a look at Zen Internet Broadband.
They provide a great service with real people to talk to if a problem arises - which it usually doesn't.
They're at:-

HI,
MAy I suggest AOL -- if you call up -- and ask for the £9.99 a month deal.

I thoroughly recommend looking at this site. Very detailed and you can do comparisons of the different ISP's out there.

Thanks everyone for your help.
The Zen site was particularly useful as it has a bandwidth calculator. Looks like I only need 0.5GB per month.
All I have to do now is choose one...0 -
Can't go wrong with Zen.

Have to agree, have been with Zen for over 3 years and they have been very good.
When I do a comparison however, I usually find Zen, Eclipse and Nildram come out as the top 3 (but it depends what you want).
Details of all these can be found at http://www.adslguide.org.uk/0 -
I'm with eclipse, and the service so far has been very good!0
