Someone is giving out my email!

I hope someone on here can give me some ideas. I've had my original business email for 12 years - myname @btinternet.com

Someone else registered with btinternet a couple of years ago - she has the same name but her btinternet email address is mynamesurname @btinternet.com. I worked this out when I received the original setup emails from BT....

Since then, I've had travel bookings, e-tickets, orders for haircare products etc landing in my inbox, plus numbers of personal emails. I've got a standard copy and paste that I add to the emails and return to sender, and also forward the emails to her- to the correct email address. Usually I send them with a note asking her to stop using my email, but I've never received any acknowledgement and I'm fed up acting as her secretary!

Any ideas?

  • Firstly, I'd stop forwarding anything and just delete it. Why have you been forwarding things for two years? Maybe she's lazy and can't be bothered to change because you're doing all the work for her.

Have you tried contacting BT about it?

Why do you use a BTInternet email address for your business? It looks so unprofessional. Why don't you register a domain name and use it for your emails? It only costs a couple of quid a year and AFAIK you can use it with BT (or a lot of other providers) at no extra costs, if you have a business account. This way you're also not tied to BT for the rest of your life.

With your own domain it's very unlikely that such a thing will happen. In fact, it only can happen if somebody mis-spells the domain name of the recipient.
  • It was the original email address for my business - I've had my own domain for several years now, and about 98% of the business email goes through that! But there's still a small amount of "legacy" mail on it - old customers I haven't heard from for years occasionally contact me on it, generally to see if I can take on new business. I'm not going to turn any of that away.
  • Suggest you send an email and warn her that you will start deleting without further notice unless she acknowledges, in which case you will continue for a further 6 weeks.

  • You've given her more than enough notice. Just start either blaclisting or deleting them :)

Ah, ok. In this case I would set up an auto-responder saying that the email has been forwarded to the new email address and that one should use that new one in the future.

Do you have a website too? Then put the right contact details on it and delete the old email address. People will google for you if the emails bounce (hopefully).

Otherwise I would do it like a few people suggested and set the other person an ultimatum and delete these emails after that.

I don't know what the legal point of view is, but you could try to login on these accounts and change the email address by yourself. First you reset the password which should be sent to you and then you change the contact details. Or you just delete these accounts. But I think it's legally a very (dark) grey area. Technically these accounts could belong to you as it is your email address...
  • I would just hit the delete button.

I don't know what business you are in so I can only be generic. There are quite a few people these days who will NOT deal with a company simple because they have an email address ending @yahoo.co.uk, hotmail.com or btinternet.com. Simply because it makes the company look amateurish. No offense meant :)

  • I don't understand this. You both have the same email? How come she is using your email address? Is she getting emails you should be receiving?
