Hi,
What are my chances of being able to do this?
Have been having a discussion with some old friends from primary school and the subject of the Year 6 Christmas performance (1986) came up. It appears that I'm the only one to have a copy on video.
Is it possible to upload the video to Facebook? (For free, preferably.) I've read http://www.ehow.com/how_4451655_upload-vhs-tapes-onto-computer.html but don't really understand it.
We don't have a DVD recorder (we have Sky+, if that's of any use?) but I believe people at work do so that should be an option...
Many thanks,
Jim

You need a device to digitise your video onto your computer.
Something like this:-
http://www.amazon.co.uk/AverMedia-DVD-EZMaker-USB-Gold/dp/B001C173XI/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1284579542&sr=1-7
You would use this in conjunction with your VHS machine.
When you have edited it you can then up load it to the You Tube, Friend Face or whatever. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Thanks.
Though at that price I would have thought it was cheaper to take it somewhere to get it done.
Any other thoughts, anyone?0 -
Ok, so, you'll need to get this video on the computer somehow. The cheapest is probably to find someone with a DVD recorder, then hook the VHS into it and copy it onto DVD. Sky+ isn't any use to you.
Then you'll need something like this guide: http://www.dvdpe.com/DVD-to-Youtube.html
There's quite a lot out there, just do a bit of searching.0 -

You have to digitise the video onto your computer before you can upload it to Facebook or any other website.
If you don't understand the guide above, or other online guides on how to do this, then either you have to learn more so that you DO understand them, or find someone else who does understand what's involved.

Once its converted you may have a problem uploading the file as it won't be small.0

If you have a digital camera and happy to compromise on quality, you may be able to video the video running on tv? Although you might get black lines on the screen...0
-
Ok, I think I'm there.
Will try The Grandmaster's suggestion (easiest and cheapest, if it works) but if the quality's no good I'll see if I can get someone to put it onto DVD for me.
I've got a DVD recorder built in to my PC, but I presume that won't help.
Alternatively, how easy is it to do a video to video copy? I could then post them to whoever wants them. I've got a TV with a built-in video and a standalone video. Can I just plug the video into the TV combi, hit play on one and record on the other??
Many thanks all,

Yes you can, but the quality of the copy will not be as good as the original. Remember that analogue video degrades over time, so the sooner its digitised the better.
Another gadget.

If you have a mini DV camcorder it may just have an analogue input that would enable you to copy your video onto miniDV then use the camcorders Firewire port to transfer the digitised copy to your PC for editing. That gum you like is coming back in style.0
