Best Accidental Damage Insurance for a laptop?

Hi there,

My son is off to university at the end of this week and I was hoping to get some insurance out on his laptop.

His halls already have basic contents insurance so really I'm only looking for accidental damage insurance for the laptop. I've come across website such as laptopinsurance.org.uk but am a bit wary as i've never had an experience with them.

Would anyone have any recommendations at all?
Merry Christmas MSE!

Your home insurance can add accidental damage.

It can if it wishes but the insurer will need to know of the circumstances so it can assess the risk properly.

Some home contents policies will allow for contents temporarily away from home to a certain value (different from a personal belongings cover).

There would be certain conditions for cover for student belongings and the laptop might be excluded from this as it is possibly a higher risk.

You should probably be able to cover the laptop by specifying it on your policy for cover away from the home. Or if you have a personal belongings cover it may already be covered on your policy (not sure if this is valid for students at uni though). Ring your insurer and explain what you need. They should be able to give you a price for adding this.
  • Check your home contents doesnt cover for ad to home entertainment items. Would only cover you for damage in the home though

many household plans can have student cover included with personal possessions cover. So, investigating home insurance first is logical as often its included already or a small cost option.
