hi we have a combi boiler. Problem has been ongoing for quite a while now. the radiator in the living room does not get warm, the pipes to it come down from the loft (live in bungalow) and one of them gets warm up to about 2 feet from radiator. last year radiator was power flushed and that sorted it. However came to turn radiator on last week, and this problem. tried bleeding but water comes out immediately. any ideas please, also tried turning all other rads off but no difference

other than more sludge ..
try this
you have to balance the system ..
that means slightly turning off the other rads return valves so you have more flow to the one thats giving the trouble
also if it has a thermostatic valve ..this may be up the shoot ....or needs shielding from the heat to trick it into working..to check this out take the thermostat part off it ..and see if the rad then works.
if you have a gas fire on in the room on at the same time ..the thermostatic valve is just doing its job

thanks for quick reply.
There is no fire in the room
how do I take thermostat part out?0 -
There should be a knurled threaded collar at the base of it ...this can be undone by hand..,..the whole thing just lifts off then.
Then you will get full flow to the rad ..but make sure first, that the return valve on the other side of the rad, under a cap ,hasn't been partly closed.
btw if the room is already at over 19 - 21 degrees c ..then the valve is doing its job

Sticky TRV methinks (the valve itself rather than the thermo head). As said above take the head off but now operate the valve a few times by pushing down on the pin against the spring.
Replace head. Does it work now?

Hi
The pipe that gets warm , does it go to the TRV end?

Have to agree, I have to free most of my TRV,s of at the start of every winter.Turn your heating on and just keep pressing the pin, at first it will only move a bit but will then suddenly spring out,and you will hear the water flow.Dont be surprised if you have to do this a few times when you put the head back on till it finally settles down.0 -

GSR.
the valve is fully open as I undid the cover and tried to unscrew it but it is fully open. Also pushed the pin down at thermostat end and that seems to spring up ok. any other ideas0 -
WELL YOU HAVE TO DO THE BALANCING NOW .

Not sure it's a balancing problem.
Confident?

Hi.
As you have tried turning all the rads off , the TRV pin is free and, I assume ,the opposite end to the TRV is fully open I can only suggest a near complete blockage of pipework or valves. An air lock on a sealed system is unusual but not totally impossible I suppose.
