Appeal advice: Extremely harsh parking in Leeds

Yesterday I received a parking ticket on Lady Lane in Leeds, I am from out of town so I was unaware of the cost of parking and I didn't have any change. I parked my car up, went to the ticket machine to check the rates and then went to the shop to get some change. When I came back, I walked past three traffic wardens just meters from my car. I got in my car and decided to park in the car park which was where the street was (it was a very big car park) as the rates were better. I parked up and I ended up next to the wardens I walked passed earlier. I got out and one of them told me I've already been issued with a parking ticket because my girlfriend (who was waiting in the car) told them I was just getting some change. I argued that was was there for only five minutes max but they were having non of it, because 'they thought I was getting change for the street parking'
Can any give me some advice of appealing to this? I got told a while ago that "tickets cannot be issued unless it is placed onto the parked car" and "you have given 10minutes to find a way of purchasing a ticket for parking"
Here is the full scenario
I pulled up to a parking space on Lady Lane; I didn't have any change so I went off to the shop around the corner
On the way, I checked the rates at the ticket machine which was on the way to the shop. It was £5 for 2 hours, ad then I wet to the shop and bought a drink and ask for pound coins in change for the parking.
On the way back to the car, I saw a banner for the carpark that was £6 for 24hours, so I thought about it and carried on walking to the car.
I walked past three traffic wardens, who were literally meters away from my car. They didn't say anything to me so I assumed everything was okay because I was gone for five minutes
Got in my car, drove off to the car park which was basically just turning into a large open car park it was so close (as Lady Lane is by the side of the car park)
I parked up, so happen to be next to the traffic wardens I walked passed earlier and was then told I have been issued a parking ticket
They said I should have paid seeing as though I had change to pay for the car park - they couldn't take in that I went to get change
They said I should have spoke to them - I walked passed them and they didn't say a word to me even though we were so close to my car
They said I should have paid for that 5minutes of parking
I have not received the ticket yet, but I am definitely going to appeal for this harsh fine. Though would like to see if any of you have any good advice for this? I have also considered writing to complain to the Leeds council was this is brutally harsh and totally immoral
Thanks for taking your time to read this

When you get the ticket, take pics of it and remove personal bits. Host on tinypic and copy the url. paste the url into a post and remove the http:// bit. The way you describe it is confusing(to my feeble brain) and there's a fair chance the ceo's will mess it up. I am assuming these were council wardens, if not and are private ones ignore the above and any invoice you get.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Apparently there was some mention of illegal markings being used in many spaces in Leeds. May be worth looking into.
Have you seen the small car park on Lady Lane itself? What a tip that looks
BTW Roger Cook (or at least someone on the program) walked down that very road from a phone shop that used to be at the top on the right (now a recruitment agency I think) and had someone trying to sell him something dodgy to do with mobile phones. Don't recall the exact details. 0 -
Chances are there are plenty of reasons to show the parking spaces, signage, markings or the ticket are invalid. Unfortunately once the ticket is produced you have to spend the next few months proving this to them.
Pepipoo is the place to be once you get the ticket. Start looking at their forums now to get an understanding of what you are entering into.0
