I only asked for help on the relationship status though. I got my answer which I'm grateful for. I didn't need to answer the other questions

OK, for the purposes of calculating benefits, you are classed as a couple and his income is taken into account. You will get 6 months contributions based JSA if you have sufficient NI contributions then you'll get nothing as he earns too much. Likewise you'll not get HB or CTB.

The fact there's a loan repayment involved is completely and utterly irrelevent - benefits are not for repaying finance.

I'm not claiming HB or CTB. MY JSA (if I get it) will not be for HIS finance, it will be for my contribution towards half of keeping our house or we will be homeless.

    FOR EXAMPLE:
I will pay what I can towards the rent and utility bills using MY JSA. He will pay the rest of the rent and utility bills. I am in no way saying that I will be using MY JSA to pay for HIS finance
  • But you did volunteer the info.
My advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.

Because I thought it would help make the decision on whether I'm classed as single or married. I now realise it did not make any difference.
  • The application doesn't ask for marital status as in single/married/cohabiting (and certainly wouldn't say common law as there is no such thing - hasn't been in England/Wales since 1753 and not in Scotland since 2006). The application will simply ask if you have a partner and it will also give an explanation of what a partner is in terms of the application (someone you are married to, or someone you live with as if you were married, a civil partner or a person you live with as if you are civil partners.)

There are a lot of areas around the forums where you can get ideas on how to make your income stretch, even where you think there's no wiggle room. I went from being constantly overdrawn on my bank account to having a little savings by following some of the ideas on MSE.

    Hope that helps.

Because you came on the forum for help, did you not?

A lot of these posts are people moaning which isn't help.

Wow. I am shocked at the responses this person has received. She only wanted to know what option to choose.

The question is relationship status and one of the options is common law. OP, this is what you should choose.
