Why are gold and other precious metals deemed more valuable than food stuffs?

Gold is hardly used at all compared to silver.
The price of silver has been suppressed so low that its uneconomic to get it back.
Gold is nearly always retrieved so stockpiles are increasing.
Silver is being consumed more than is being mined and is mostly uneconomic to retrieve it all ends up in the sea or on landfill.0
