Mary King's close is a great experience, looks back at how folk lived, pretty dark and basic living conditions recreated for all to see, will make you glad of your Travelodge!!

So anyone that has been to or lives in Edinburgh - what are the following places like:

    1. Scottish Houses of Parliament - is it far from the centre and is it worth a look at?
    2. Tigerlily hotel - whats it like?
    3. Best shops to visit?

1.bottom of royal mile near Dynamic Earth and Holyrood palace. never been!
    2.no idea
3.all the usual high street stores...plus the designer ones. large shopping centre with john lewis, princes street mostly high street type stores, george street a bit more designer...and of course Harvey nicks and a few upmarket designers round those parts...
To be honest we tend to shop more at the out of town places like Straiton, Fort Kinnaird, Livingstone (Almondvale and McArthur Glen.)

The zoo is really good - esp the penguin parade (thinks it's 3pm everyday). There are 2 galleries on princes st that are really good adn easy to find, i know one is definitely free. the scott monument on princes st too is work a look, costs a few quid and the stairs can be tough going but it's worth it for the view.

Enjoy edinburgh, hope you have fun,

    1) It's by Holyrood at the bottom of the Royal Mile - ie the other end from the Castle

    2) No idea

    3) I don't rate shopping in Edinburgh at all - apart from kilt makers & charity shops - The Times, Edinburgh Evening News

The new parly building is very different, I wouldn't have bothered but we found it by accident on our way to our hotel.

Looks much the same as any new govt related building- all glass wood metal stuff. Depends on what you prefer, I suppose.

I'd prefer a trip round the castle- at the top of the Royal Mile

There's a great map shop halfway up the Royal Mile too- great choice of very interesting map pictures.

Tigerlily does LUSCIOUS food for ok prices (fpr Edinburgh)

I have only been for breakfast and lunch a couple of times as I think it would get to 'dressy' at night and not so enjoyable (a little on the pretentious side me thinks)

They are a sister chain of Indigo Yard which has been providing great food in Edinburgh for years.

You can get 3 courses with a large glass of wine for under £20 (and that was a steak)

Lunch menus are always cheaper in Edinburgh, they seem to add a few pounds just to eat in the evening.

I highly recommend it for eating, but have no idea what the hotel is like.

  • Anytime we go through to Edinburgh we always end up in a bar/bistro called Tiles in St Andrews Square just a stones throw from Harvey Nicks
