when to inform tax credits?

Im having my second child tomorrow by elective caesarean and its unlikely ill get on top of child benefit very quickly as ill need time to recover.

Currently receive small amount of CTC for my son and whenever ive reported a change of circumstances they have been very quick to amend award, however id like to know when to inform CTC of the birth of second child, should i just ring them up at some point next week and let them know or should i wait until i have sent away for CB and had confirmation of this back?

  • You can inform them anytime after the baby is born, but they may require further info/proof if the child doesn't match against the child benefit database when they check. You could be required to complete a form TC655 and return with the UK birth certificate. Most times payments are put into place once you've notified the helpline.
  • As above. I would possibly wait until I had sent off the CB form (and make this a priority) as they will need confirmtation that your second child actually exists!

Congratulations in advance by the way :)
  • I called tax credits 2 days after our second child was born and gace them all the details and it was amended quickly.they also did the CB too at the same time. hope that helps, best of luck tomorrow x

Send off the child benefit form plus birth certificate to add the new baby to your claim. Then call the Tax credit office (TCO) and give them the details of the new baby. You can tell TCO that you have already sent forms off to add the baby to your child benefit claim. TCO do not need a birth certificate usually.

Hope all goes well tomorrow :D
